The First Flushing Toilet

The flushing toilet was invented in 1596... I wonder what people did beforehand. I mean it says flushing toilet so did people before 1596 have no toilets, or did they just not flush? If you look at the picture below and are totaly shocked, yes that is what a toilet looked like back then, grose i know.
